Travis Kann chief of staff Ontario appointment takes effect March 6, 2026 as Patrick Sackville departs after eight years

TORONTO — Premier Doug Ford has named Travis Kann as his new chief of staff, effective March 6, 2026, marking a leadership transition within the Premier’s Office as Ontario continues to navigate economic uncertainty and cross-border trade pressures.

Kann currently serves in dual roles as principal secretary and head of Ontario-U.S. engagement. In those positions, he has been responsible for coordinating the execution of the government’s plan to protect Ontario’s economy, including advancing special economic zones, addressing internal trade barriers and accelerating road construction linked to the Ring of Fire mining region.

“During his time in government, Travis has helped steer our government through some of Ontario and Canada’s most significant challenges, including our ongoing response to the economic threat posed by President Trump’s tariffs,” said Premier Ford in a statement announcing the appointment. “As Ontario continues to navigate ongoing economic uncertainty, no one is better positioned to provide steady, disciplined leadership for our government.”

Leadership During Trade and Economic Pressures

As head of Ontario-U.S. engagement, Kann has also led the province’s strategy to build relationships with American lawmakers in Washington and at the state level. His portfolio included advocacy efforts tied to the review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), as well as broader cross-border economic coordination.

The appointment comes as Ontario continues to position itself against external trade pressures while promoting domestic economic resilience, including through infrastructure development and resource projects in Northern Ontario.

Transition from Patrick Sackville

Patrick Sackville, who has served as chief of staff for eight years, will remain with the government until March 6 to support the transition.

“I am immensely proud of the enormous contributions that Patrick has made to our government, to our province and to our country,” Premier Ford said. “After eight years of dedicated service to our government and province, Patrick is leaving behind a legacy few people can match and Ontario’s future is brighter because of his time as chief of staff. I am so thankful for Patrick’s leadership and service. There are amazing things ahead for him.”

The leadership change reflects a continuity of strategy within the Premier’s Office, with Kann moving from a senior advisory and engagement role into the government’s top staff position at a time when Ontario continues to emphasize economic competitiveness, trade diversification and large-scale infrastructure development.

Further details regarding Kann’s expanded responsibilities are expected following the formal transition in early March.
