
Ottawa – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a series of diplomatic calls with leaders from Jordan, Qatar, and Lebanon on February 3, discussing ongoing Middle East tensions, humanitarian efforts, and regional stability.
In his conversation with King Abdullah II of Jordan, Trudeau welcomed the recent ceasefire between Hamas and Israel and the continued release of hostages. The two leaders discussed the instability in the West Bank and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Trudeau thanked King Abdullah II for his leadership in facilitating aid for Palestinians and highlighted Canada’s commitment of $50 million in humanitarian assistance for Gaza and the West Bank.
The situation in Syria was also a focal point, with both leaders acknowledging Jordan’s role in providing assistance following the fall of the Assad regime in December. Trudeau expressed Canada’s commitment to humanitarian aid and the development of a Syrian-led political governance structure.
During his call with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, Trudeau praised Qatar’s role in brokering the ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Hamas and Israel. He also thanked the Amir for Qatar’s efforts in securing the safe release of Canadian David Lavery from Afghanistan. The leaders discussed the broader regional situation, particularly in Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria, and reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties between Canada and Qatar.
Trudeau also spoke with Lebanon’s newly elected President Joseph Aoun, congratulating him on his election and emphasizing Canada’s continued support for Lebanon. Both leaders underscored the importance of maintaining the ceasefire along Lebanon’s southern border and supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces. Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s solidarity with the Lebanese people and the two leaders agreed to strengthen diplomatic cooperation.
These discussions highlight Canada’s continued engagement in the Middle East, emphasizing humanitarian aid, diplomatic stability, and strong international partnerships.
