Ottawa – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to the Lebanese people during a conversation with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati, following escalating tensions in the region. Trudeau addressed the situation in Lebanon and the ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, a militant group backed by Iran.
In a tweet shared on September 29, Trudeau emphasized that the people of Lebanon deserve to live in peace and security, free from the violence and instability brought about by Hezbollah’s actions. He also touched on recent developments, including the reported elimination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, a significant figure who has shaped the group’s direction for years.
“The people of Lebanon deserve to live in peace and security, free from conflict and from Hezbollah’s Iran-backed terrorism,” Trudeau said. He also called for a ceasefire, warning that further escalation could plunge Lebanon and the broader region into deeper turmoil.

This conversation comes amid mounting concerns over the potential for wider conflict in the Middle East. Hezbollah has been a key player in regional instability, with its influence extending beyond Lebanon’s borders into Syria, Iraq, and other parts of the Middle East. Nasrallah’s death, if confirmed, could provoke a new wave of unrest as Hezbollah’s allies and rivals react to the shift in power.
Trudeau reiterated Canada’s long-standing support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and urged international efforts to bring about stability in the region. He also stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of conflict and terrorism, particularly the role of foreign-backed militias like Hezbollah.
Lebanon has faced significant challenges in recent years, including an economic collapse and ongoing political instability. The situation has worsened due to Hezbollah’s activities, which have drawn criticism from the international community, including Canada.
As the situation in Lebanon remains fluid, the international community, including Canada, is watching closely. Trudeau’s message of support underscores Canada’s role in seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts in the Middle East, while also aligning with broader efforts to combat terrorism in the region.
