Thornhill — The Ontario government is investing $55,000 in the Vaughan International Film Festival (VFF) as part of its 2025 Experience Ontario program, aiming to boost tourism, celebrate local culture, and strengthen small businesses. The announcement was made by Thornhill MPP Laura Smith, a long-time supporter of the festival, which continues to be a prominent platform for emerging Canadian filmmakers.

The funding is part of a nearly $20 million investment supporting more than 350 festivals and events across Ontario. VFF organizers say the grant has already expanded programming and helped draw visitors to local restaurants, hotels, and shops in the Vaughan area.

“Film serves as a powerful tool to celebrate our communities and connect us through shared stories,” said MPP Laura Smith. “This investment is a testament to our commitment to preserving and growing the arts in Ontario.”

VFF Director of Sponsorship & Events Antonio Ienco confirmed that MPP Smith will co-present the festival’s inaugural Best Canadian Film award this year, adding, “This award serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting Canadian artists and providing them with platforms like VFF to celebrate and showcase their creative spirit.”

Senior Writer and Editor Jane Ranjanantham also expressed gratitude for the provincial support. “With the support of the Government of Ontario, we’ve been able to deliver a vibrant festival experience that not only showcases diverse voices in film but also strengthens tourism and the local economy right here in Vaughan.”

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming Stan Cho emphasized the broader impact of the Experience Ontario program. “Festivals and events showcase the best of Ontario, its people and its culture all while inviting people near and far to experience and enjoy our province.”
