On Saturday, August 16, at approximately 12:27 a.m., Toronto Police responded to reports of gunfire in the area of Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive.

Inside a residence, officers found 8-year-old Jahvai Roy with a gunshot wound caused by a stray bullet. Despite immediate medical attention, Jahvai tragically passed away in hospital. This marks the 26th homicide in Toronto for 2025.

Police Appeal

The suspect had fled the scene before police arrived. Investigators are urgently seeking help from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area. Community members are asked to come forward with any information to assist the ongoing homicide investigation.

Community Impact

An 8-year-old child killed by a stray bullet pierces the city’s sense of safety like never before. Families in Toronto now fear that even their homes may not offer protection. In response, community organizations are rallying excitedly—from vigils to calls for immediate changes in public safety policy.

What Needs to Be Done

  • Targeted violence prevention campaigns in residential areas

  • CCTV and neighborhood watch engagement, especially around mid-summer hotspots

  • Advocates and city leaders alike are urging Ottawa to crack down on cross-border gun smuggling that fuels violence in Toronto and beyond.

Context & Urgency

Stray-bullet deaths hitting innocent children are rare—but each incident sends shockwaves through the city. As Toronto approaches the mid-point of the homicide toll from last year, preventing further tragedies must be a collective priority.
