“We are Fearless” rallying call for Toronto’s International Women’s Day

TORONTOMarch 9, 2019 /CNW/ – Thousands of people will take part in the annual International Women’s Day rally, and march through the heart of Toronto in support of critical social programs including health care, education and the justice, dignity and fair employment standards for all workers.

“As midwives, we fought for years to be recognized and for equal pay, we will continue to fight for the health care system women deserve,” said Manavi Handa.

Rally speaker, Chloe Lederman, representing a new generation of young women said “We will not accept an education system that doesn’t teach about consent. We are not afraid to mobilize a new generation of young women in support of sex education and an end to violence, especially against aboriginal women”.

The $15 and Fairness campaign has been a province-wide leader in fighting cuts to fair labour laws. Karen Manso, from $15 and Fairness said “we fought for years for small but significant changes for workers rights, like $15 minimum wage. Ford can’t just tell us to go away. We don’t stop organizing until there is justice for all workers, fair wages, fair scheduling, fair rights to join a union. We will not go away, we are fearless”.

“I organized a rally to bring attention to Tina Fontaine and other missing and murdered aboriginal women. Joining together with thousands of people is a powerful statement of what we can do when we work together. We are fearless”, said Indygo Arscott.

Uniting under theme of “We are Fearless” the International Women’s Day March is one of Toronto’s most diverse events with women’s groups, community organizations, trade unions, students and women’s rights advocates to celebrate and work for change.
