2021 Toronto Urban Design Awards Call for Submissions closes April 26

The Toronto Urban Design Awards, held by the City of Toronto every second year, recognize achievements in urban design, architecture and landscape architecture. The Call for Submissions closes on Monday, April 26 at 12 noon.

Designers, developers, project owners, community groups, design students and others are invited to enter eligible projects. Submission categories include elements, private buildings in context, public buildings in context, small open spaces, large places or neighbourhood designs, visions and master plans, and student projects.

As a growing city, Toronto relies on good design to ensure that it remains functional and attractive, with great architecture and successful public spaces.

The awards recognize those who contribute to improving the quality of urban design and development in this city. Design students are also encouraged to enter theoretical or studio projects relating to Toronto.

This year’s awards program focuses on the recent growth seen across the city, as well as post-pandemic equity issues that have emerged.

The submissions will receive recognition for outstanding design from an independent jury of highly-respected professionals and academics. Again this year, the jury is a small group of urban visionaries representing local and international design communities.

The 2021 jury members are:
• Fadi Masoud, Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism, and Director of the Centre for Landscape Research, University of Toronto
• Michael Leckman, MRAIC, Principal, Diamond Schmitt
• Jackie VanderVelde, OALA, AALA, MALA, SALA, APALA, CSLA, ASLA, Founder, Land Art Design Landscape Architect Inc.
• Eladia Smoke | KaaSheGaaBaaWeak, MArch, OAA, OAQ, MAA, MRAIC, LEED®AP Principal Architect, Smoke Architecture Inc.

The City will hold a virtual awards ceremony on Tuesday, September 14 to celebrate all entries and announce the winners. More information on the virtual awards ceremony will come later this summer, but it will be open to members of the public.
