Candidate nominations for Toronto’s by-election for mayor close Friday

The deadline to file or withdraw a nomination to run as a candidate in Toronto’s 2023 by-election for mayor is 2 p.m., Friday, May 12.

On May 12, nominations and withdrawals can be filed between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Toronto Elections Office on the first floor of Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St. W. Individuals filing or withdrawing nominations on that date must bring all required documents and identification with them and ensure their forms are complete. After 2 p.m., no additional nominations or withdrawals will be accepted.

Individuals are asked to bring no more than four guests and are encouraged to use the appointment booking system to book a time to file or withdraw their nomination (https://reservation.frontdesksuite.ca/torontoelecprod/electionsbooking/Home/Index?Culture=en&PageId=c1044547-6e45-4193-bc9b-f78b6c5a2a32).

To run for the Office of Mayor, a person must:
•       File a nomination paper with original signature
•       Provide proof of qualifying address within the city of Toronto
•       Pay a $200 nomination filing fee
•       Provide at least 25 endorsements of nomination from eligible Toronto voters with original signatures

Until a nomination is filed, a person cannot raise or spend money on their campaign.

Both the nomination paper and the endorsements of nomination must be completed on the prescribed forms and have original signatures. The final list of certified candidates will be available by 4 p.m on Monday, May 15 on the Toronto Elections List of Candidates & Third Party Advertisers webpage: www.toronto.ca/city-government/elections/by-election/by-election-candidate-list/.

Third party advertiser registration remains open until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 23.
