City of Toronto bundling watermain and TTC track replacement projects on King Street West

On Tuesday, February 20, the City of Toronto will begin construction work on King Street West to replace a 146-year-old watermain and aging TTC streetcar tracks between Dufferin and Shaw Streets.

This work is critical for maintaining public transit infrastructure and water services for residents in the area. Construction work will be completed over 10 months and is bundled into one project to save time and money and limit disruption.

Watermain replacement work is expected to be completed by the end of July with crews working Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. There will be one lane of traffic open in each direction around a rolling work zone.

TTC track replacement work is anticipated to start in May and will be completed in phases with full road closures in effect around a rolling work zone:
• May to June: Between Dufferin Street and Fraser Avenue
• June to July: Intersection of Dufferin and King Streets
• August to September: Between Fraser and Atlantic Avenues
• September to October: Between Atlantic Avenue and Shaw Street

From October to December, there will be intermittent lane closures while road restoration and overhead streetcar work are completed.

Streetcar track replacement work will take place 24 hours, seven days a week, as the TTC needs to complete some rail installation work overnight to protect the integrity and quality of the new rails and concrete. The City and TTC have structured the hours of construction to minimize noise disruption.

The City recognizes there will be impacts to residents and commuters but completing this work is essential to ensure long-term road safety and transit reliability while reducing future disruption.

There will be additional measures in place to help manage traffic flow including adjustments to signal timing and transit routes.

People travelling in the area should use alternate routes or take public transit and allow extra time to get to and from their destinations.
