City of Toronto proclaims and celebrates Family Caregiver Day

Today, the City of Toronto recognizes and celebrates the thousands of family caregivers in Toronto and encourages all residents to demonstrate their support and appreciation for their efforts. Mayor Tory has proclaimed April 6, 2021 as Family Caregiver Day in Toronto.

One in three Torontonians are family caregivers, providing compassionate care to a person or persons who need assistance due to a disability, a physical, neurological or mental condition, a chronic illness, frailty or age. These caregivers balance their personal lives and careers with their caregiving duties, which are often unpaid and full-time jobs in themselves.

In lieu of a celebration at City Hall this year, the City has created a short video to celebrate the resilience and spirit of caregivers across Toronto. The video features the stories of three Toronto caregivers, Carole Ann Alloway, Willow Kemp and Maya Ramakesari:

In January 2017, Toronto City Council passed a motion to proclaim the first Tuesday in April as “Family Caregiver Day.” Toronto residents are encouraged to recognize the contribution of caregivers and to demonstrate their support and appreciation for their efforts by watching and sharing the video.

Quotes:

“Family Caregiver Day gives us an opportunity to acknowledge the many people in our city who act as caregivers to family members, friends and loved ones. These people play an important role in improving the lives of others and I have no doubt that COVID-19 has made this task even more challenging. But with their commitment, they have endured the challenges brought forward by the pandemic, and have continued to care for their loved ones. I encourage everyone to take a moment to recognize these caregivers who give so much of themselves, every day.”
– Mayor John Tory

“Caregivers do important work across the city, helping seniors and others who need support due to various issues and challenges. The City of Toronto recognizes and appreciates the importance of family caregivers and I personally thank them for all they do.”
– Councillor James Pasternak (York Centre)

“I know how difficult it can be even in normal times to provide support for our loved ones, and during this pandemic it’s been particularly difficult. Caregiving can be a lonely, isolating, incredibly challenging experience, but also very rewarding. On behalf of our city, I thank you for what you do and remind you that you are not alone. I look forward to celebrating this day in person next year.”
– Councillor Josh Matlow (Toronto-St. Paul’s), Toronto’s Seniors Advocate.
