City of Toronto and Yorkdale Shopping Centre launch employment event to fill more than 300 retail positions

Mayor John Tory and Yorkdale Shopping Centre launched an employment event today to fill more than 300 positions ahead of the holiday season. It is the largest Yorkdale hiring event to date, with approximately 40 participating retailers including The Cheesecake Factory, Hunter and Woolrich which are opening their first Canadian locations at Yorkdale.

“Over the last three years, I have been focused on helping to create jobs in the city. Today’s event is all about connecting people to jobs,” said Mayor John Tory. “This is another example of the partnerships I’ve been encouraging between the City of Toronto and private sector employers to help provide job opportunities to Toronto residents and drive economic growth in our city.”

“Our retailers are focused on delivering a world-class shopping experience. Having the right talent on board is a key factor in their success,” said Claire Santamaria, General Manager, Yorkdale Shopping Centre. “There are 5,000 people employed at Yorkdale and streamlining qualified candidates for more than 270 stores allows managers to focus on their core business. Oxford Properties and the City of Toronto have established a proven formula for supporting our retailers.”

The City of Toronto has partnered with Yorkdale since 2012 to hold this event, which has helped fill more than 1,500 retail positions. Through this partnership, City staff and partner agencies identify and match qualified candidates to available opportunities. Coaching, resumé preparation and interview support are provided to candidates before the event.

Many of the participants at today’s event are youth from the City’s successful Partnership to Advance Youth Employment (PAYE) program. Since its launch in 2009, PAYE has provided thousands of youth with one-on-one support, referrals to training and education, access to networking and mentoring opportunities and jobs with career potential. Today’s event also serves as the official kickoff to the City’s sixth annual Workforce Development Month, which features a diverse lineup of more than 25 events for job seekers and employers. These and other workforce development events held throughout the year are listed at http://www.toronto.ca/workone.
