OTTAWA — Today, Premier Doug Ford issued the following statement to celebrate CHEO’s 50th anniversary:
“On behalf of the Ontario government, I am pleased to extend my heartfelt congratulations to CHEO as it marks 50 remarkable years of service.
Since opening its doors in 1974, CHEO has been a leader of pediatric health and wellness, delivering compassionate care to transform the lives of countless children and families.
From its beginnings as a community hospital, CHEO has become one of the leading pediatric centres in Canada, now including an education facility, a mental health agency, a world-class research institute and satellite service locations throughout eastern Ontario. Today, CHEO serves over 500,000 patients each year from across eastern and northern Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut.

Looking ahead, our government is proud to support CHEO’s continued growth and development. Last year, we announced a significant investment of $330 million to expand children’s health care across the province. This includes a dedicated $40.5 million to boost pediatric care in the Ottawa region, allowing CHEO to add more beds, hire more staff and reduce wait times. Additionally, we’re thrilled to support the construction of CHEO’s new Integrated Treatment Centre, or 1Door4Care, which will provide comprehensive care for children living with complex medical, developmental and behavioural health needs.
To all the staff at CHEO, both past and present, thank you for being on the frontlines of pediatric care. CHEO’s success would not be possible without the amazing team of doctors, nurses, researchers, volunteers and generous donors who have each played an incredible role in reaching this milestone.
