On Sunday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
The two leaders unequivocally condemned Hamas’ terrorist attacks against Israel and expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself in accordance with international law, including international humanitarian law.
The Prime Minister and the President expressed deep concern over the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The Prime Minister underscored the need for sustained humanitarian pauses, and the two leaders agreed on the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring unimpeded access to life-saving humanitarian aid for civilians.
The leaders also highlighted the importance of working with partners in the Middle East to prevent escalation of the conflict in the region and to support a future where Israelis and Palestinians can live in peace, security, and dignity, without fear.
Prime Minister Trudeau and President von der Leyen highlighted the strong relationship between Canada and the European Union (EU), and looked forward to seeing each other later this week at the 19th Canada-EU Leaders’ Summit, in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
