Mississauga City Council has officially declared the Ward 5 Councillor seat vacant, setting the stage for a by-election to be held concurrently with the mayoral by-election on Monday, June 10, 2024. The vacancy was initiated by the resignation of former Ward 5 Councillor, Carolyn Parrish, effective March 15, 2024.
In adherence to legislative protocols, the by-election will offer an opportunity for residents of Mississauga to elect a new representative for Ward 5. The announcement comes with specific guidelines for prospective candidates interested in running for the position.
As outlined by the election regulations, individuals aspiring to become candidates for Ward 5 Councillor must meet certain eligibility criteria. These include being a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, and either a resident of Mississauga, a property owner or tenant in the city, or the spouse of a property owner or tenant. Candidates must also not be prohibited under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, or any other applicable law.
Prospective candidates are required to submit their nomination packages by April 26, 2024, at 2 p.m. To formalize their candidacy, candidates must complete the nomination package, meet with an Election Official to validate their identification and documents, and pay a nomination fee of $100.
In an effort to provide support and guidance to potential candidates, a free candidate information session has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, from 6 to 10 p.m. This session will be held both in-person at Mississauga City Hall in the Council Chambers and via livestream.
