City of Toronto to close Bay Street and Adelaide Street West intersection for streetcar track installation

Road Closed Sign

The Bay Street and Adelaide Street West intersection will be temporarily closed from 7 a.m. on Monday, December 11 to 7 a.m. on Saturday, December 16 to allow for the installation of TTC streetcar tracks. Following the intersection closure, lanes of traffic will begin to open on Adelaide Street between York and Yonge Streets as continued work allows. Intermittent closures will be required for paving and lane markings.

The streetcar tracks will allow the 501 Queen streetcar to be diverted to Adelaide Street between York and Church Streets during the Ontario Line construction that has Queen Street closed to vehicles from Bay to Yonge Streets and Yonge to Victoria Streets.

To ease congestion resulting from this closure, City staff will be monitoring the area and providing Traffic Agent support when necessary. People driving or cycling should consider alternate routes on Wellington, Front or Dundas Streets. King Street should be avoided as it is a Transit Priority Corridor where through movements for vehicles are prohibited at most intersections. Emergency services, pedestrian, property and business access will be maintained throughout construction. Signage will be placed in advance to advise people driving and cycling of traffic changes during the closure.

With various construction projects taking place in the downtown core, drivers are advised to plan their travel and consider public transit, cycling or walking. To plan essential trips and get updates about the closure, people travelling to the area can use the Road Restrictions map available on the City’s website: toronto.ca/roadrestrictions.
