Less Talk, More Action to Bring Cell Service to Toronto Subway

Toronto City Councilor Brad Bradford

TORONTO – Brad Bradford is calling for less talk and more action from the TTC to guarantee that all Torontonians get the cell service they need to stay safe on the subway. The people of Toronto cannot wait two more years for something that should have been done a decade ago.

The Rogers commitment of two years to expand network coverage, with no guarantees people using other carriers will be able to call home in an emergency, is another example of the deferral and delay that holds Toronto back.

In light of the Rogers deal announced Monday night, Brad is calling on the TTC Board, at their April 13 meeting, to ensure the final terms of the Rogers deal puts the highest priority on the ability of all customers, regardless of carrier, to be able to use their cell phones on the existing network on day one of the takeover coming into force.

“No matter who their cell service provider is, the people of Toronto need to be able to use their cell phone on the subway and be able to call home in an emergency,” said Brad. “In trumpeting their deal, Rogers is only committing to offer a minority of people in Toronto full service within two years and that isn’t good enough. As Mayor, I will hold the TTC accountable to ensure all Torontonians get service.”

Brad’s SafeTTC Now action plan will bring cell reception to subways across the network. The Vancouver Skytrain and Montreal Metro all offer cell service regardless of telecom carrier across their networks. The Eglinton Crosstown, nearly ready for operation, will offer cell service across telecom carriers when it opens in Toronto. The legal, business, and technical framework to get this done exists. The people of Toronto need less talk and more action to get it done.

Brad Bradford will be the strong mayor of action Toronto needs. He understands the challenges the city is facing because his young family lives them every day. As Mayor, Brad will use every tool of that office to deliver results for the city.
