Ontario Paving the Way for Sault Ste. Marie Business to Expand

$1 million investment will support local asphalt plant

Ross Romano, Minister of Government and Consumer Services

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Ontario government is providing $1 million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to support the expansion of Avery Construction Ltd. in Sault Ste. Marie. This investment will help the company offer a reliable and more environmentally friendly source of asphalt for local projects.

“By helping local businesses to innovate and expand their operations, we are strengthening our local economy and providing new products and services to people throughout Northern Ontario,” said Ross Romano, MPP for Sault Ste. Marie. “We are also creating great employment opportunities through this $1 million investment that will create four full-time jobs and an additional twelve seasonal full-time jobs.”

The funding will be used to purchase a portable asphalt plant. The new equipment will allow the company to provide a more environmentally sound asphalt for use on local road projects, as well as for paving parking lots, pathways and driveways.

“We are committed to creating and protecting jobs and boosting local economies across Northern Ontario,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry. “By investing in companies that innovate and adopt new technologies, we are reinforcing the North’s competitive advantage.”

“We at Avery Construction are grateful for NOHFC’s partnership in seeing this expansion through,” said Amanda Williams, Avery Construction. “Welcoming asphalting as another facet of our company was a critical next step for us and has allowed our construction division to become a start-to-finish heavy civil solution. We are pleased that the resulting job creation exceeded our expectations following this investment and we look forward to maximizing the environmentally sustainable capabilities this asphalt plant has to offer.”

The NOHFC promotes economic prosperity across Northern Ontario by providing financial assistance to projects—big and small, rural and urban—that stimulate growth, job creation and skills development. Since June 2018, the NOHFC has invested more than $432 million in 4,025 projects in Northern Ontario, leveraging more than $1.4 billion in investment and creating or sustaining over 6,200 jobs.

Quick Facts

  • In 2021, the Ontario government launched new and improved NOHFC programs that support more projects in rural northern communities and make it easier for more people and businesses to apply. The programs target existing and emerging markets, provide more work opportunities for Indigenous people and address the skilled labour shortage in the North.
