Trudeau speaks with President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, to discuss the close partnership between the two countries and the ongoing conflict in northern Ethiopia.

The Prime Minister and President reaffirmed their countries’ strong bilateral relationship, and committed to continue working to advance shared priorities for Canada and Kenya, including in the areas of trade, environmental protection, the recovery from the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and collaboration on the Commonwealth.

Prime Minister Trudeau underscored Canada’s strong and ongoing commitment to supporting African-led efforts to bring a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ethiopia, and expressed appreciation for President Kenyatta’s efforts to bring parties into an inclusive dialogue toward such a resolution. The two leaders agreed on the importance of respect for human rights as well as unhindered access to and delivery of humanitarian assistance for those affected by the conflict. They also agreed to stay in touch regarding the situation.
