MISSISSAUGA, ON – Friday evening marks the beginning of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection presented by Real Canadian Superstore. Rounds one, two and three are set to take place on Friday April 21st beginning at 7:00 PM. The draft will then resume on Saturday April 22nd at 9:00 AM with rounds four through fifteen.
The Steelheads hold 12 draft picks this year, including the 7th overall pick. After a busy trade deadline that saw three key players move to other clubs, the Steelheads ensured success in the future by bringing in six new players and 13 picks over four years, including three picks 2023.
Mississauga recently completed a trade with the Flint Firebirds to acquire an additional pick in the 2023 Draft. The Steelheads picked up a 6th round pick (115th overall) in exchange for a 2025 5th round pick that originally belonged to the Sarnia Sting.
Of note:
• Steelheads have had the 7th overall pick twice previously in franchise history, selecting Zakary Lavoie in 2020 and Kirill Nizhnikov in 2016.
• This is the first time the Steelheads have two picks in the 2nd round since 2020.
• The Steelheads will select 208th overall, a spot where the Steelheads selected Nicholas Canade back in 2016.
• The last time the Steelheads had the 248th overall pick was in 2018, where the team selected Michael Stubbs.
• Mississauga will have the 35th overall pick this year. This past season, the Steelheads acquired Justin DeZoete from the Peterborough Petes, who was originally selected 35th overall by the club in the 2020 OHL Draft.
