Dr. Eileen de Villa receives her third dose of COVID-19 vaccine, encouraging Toronto to get vaccinated

Today, the City of Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Eileen de Villa, received her third dose of COVID-19 vaccine at the Cloverdale City-run immunization clinic. She booked her third dose appointment through the provincial booking system when she became eligible to do so last Monday.

Dr. de Villa is currently on medical leave and her anticipated return to work is early next week. Although healing after surgery, she felt it important to get her booster as soon as she was eligible. In light of the increased transmissibility of the Omicron variant, Dr. de Villa encourages all Torontonians to receive their third dose as quickly as they are able.

Given the emergence of this new Omicron variant and the ongoing transmission of the Delta variant, it is more important than ever to get vaccinated and follow public health guidance. Getting the COVID-19 vaccine lowers the risk of serious illness, hospitalization and death, while protecting individuals and the wider community from getting sick.

A third dose of COVID-19 vaccine provides an extra layer of protection against COVID-19. Anyone over the age of 50 who received their second dose approximately three months (84 days) ago is now eligible for a third – sometimes called “booster” – dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Information on how to get vaccinated is available on the City’s COVID-19: How to Get Vaccinated webpage: www.toronto.ca/home/covid-19/covid-19-vaccines/covid-19-how-to-get-vaccinated/.

Quote:

“Although I am healing after surgery, a third dose is so important that I took the first available appointment when I became eligible. Omicron is circulating in our community and each of us must do all that we can to protect ourselves, each other and our communities.”
