What Work is Taking Place?

  • Tunneling is complete and the extraction shaft at Eglinton and Holly is almost complete.
  • Crews will be removing the two east Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs): Don, the north TBM, and Humber, the south TBM. The east TBMs will be disassembled and removed in pieces. The pieces will be loaded onto trucks and transported offsite.
  • Each TBM will require one week of overnight work to be removed. In order to complete this work, there will be nightly closures of all lanes on Eglinton Avenue East between Yonge Street and Dunfield Avenue.

Hours of Work

Don TBM Removal

  • Nightly from March 13, 2017 at 9PM to March 18, 2017 at 5AM (Weekday and weekend work).
  • Daytime Hours: Short term blockages on Eglinton Avenue East, just east of Holly Street, will be required.
  • Overnight Hours (9PM – 5AM each night): Full closure of Eglinton Avenue East between Yonge Street and Dunfield Avenue.

Humber TBM Removal 

  • We are currently projecting this work to occur in April 2017 on four specific nights from 9PM to 5AM (Weekday and weekend work). Specific dates will be communicated closer to the start of work.
  • Daytime Hours: Short term blockages on Eglinton Avenue East, just east of Holly Street, will be required.
  • Overnight Hours (9PM – 5AM each night): Full closure of Eglinton Avenue East between Yonge Street and Dunfield Avenue.

What to Expect

  • Businesses and residents nearby can expect to hear noise as the TBMs are dismantled and pulled out of the ground during the overnight hours.
  • Cranes, large trucks, and other heavy construction equipment will be used for this work.
  • Work may be rescheduled due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Traffic Details

  • Access for local traffic on Eglinton Avenue East between Yonge Street and Holly Street will be available.
  • Access to Eglinton Avenue East from northbound Holly Street will be closed.
  • Access to Holly Street from eastbound Eglinton Avenue East will remain open.
  • Detours for traffic travelling eastbound and westbound on Eglinton Avenue East will be available.
    • Dunfield Avenue will be converted to a two-way street from 9PM – 5AM nightly.
    • Parking on the west side of Dunfield Avenue will be prohibited nightly.
  • Paid Duty Police Officers will be located at detour intersections to assist with traffic direction.

Pedestrian Details

  • The sidewalk on the north side of Eglinton Avenue East will be closed to through-pedestrian traffic between the two Bell buildings, at 50 Eglinton Avenue East and 72 Eglinton Avenue East.  This section of the north sidewalk will remain closed from early-March to mid-April after the second TBM has been extracted.
  • Pedestrians will be diverted to the sidewalk on the south side of Eglinton Avenue East, which will remain open during the overnight hours.
  • Pedestrian access to businesses will remain open at all times.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be separated from construction works using construction barrels, temporary fencing, or concrete barriers.
  • Please watch for additional signage directing pedestrian traffic and please take care when travelling near construction zones.

Transit Details

  • Eastbound and westbound TTC routes will be diverted along Roehampton Ave and Berwick Ave. For further information please visit the TTC Service Advisory page available at www.ttc.ca.
  • Relocation and re-routing of bus stops is done in consultation between TTC and Metrolinx to ensure construction can continue safely while minimizing impacts on the community and customers.
  • Please look for signage informing passengers of the new temporary stop location.
