The City of Toronto is considering changes to the bylaw governing fences on private property and is inviting residents to share their views at a meeting on April 4.

The fence bylaw sets rules about the height and construction materials of fences, including any hedge or shrub that functions as a fence. The bylaw also has specific rules about pool fences to enhance safety around pools.

This review is being undertaken to modernize the bylaw, ensure that it continues to meet community safety needs and provide clearer language to make it simpler for residents to understand. The following changes are being considered:

• increasing fence height
• changing regulations around hedges and shrubs that act as fences
• updating pool enclosure requirements to provide more flexibility for residents and recognize changes in the types and styles of enclosures in today’s market
• changing the fence exemption application process
• and increasing maximum fine amounts for fence violations.

The public meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. at North York Civic Centre, Committee Room 3, 5100 Yonge St.

Residents can also submit written comments to mlsfeedback@toronto.ca.

A staff report with recommendations is expected to go to the City’s Licensing and Standards Committee on May 4, 2018.

More information about the review is available at https://www.toronto.ca/fences.
