Ontario Ending Hallway Health Care in Etobicoke with Hospital Expansion

“We made a promise to end hallway health care and to protect what matters most to the people of Ontario,” said Ford. “Today, we are taking another step toward delivering on those commitments with the grand opening of the new four-storey patient tower at Etobicoke General Hospital that will provide better access to patient services, including emergency, maternal, and newborn care. With hospital projects like this one, we are making sure everyone in Ontario has access to the high-quality care they expect and deserve.”

Premier Ford was joined at the grand opening by Robin Martin, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, on behalf of Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, Christine Elliott.

The new patient tower will add 250,000 square feet of space and house urgently needed services. Patients and families living in Etobicoke will benefit from:

• A state-of-the-art emergency department;
• An expanded critical care unit with intensive monitoring and treatment for serious illnesses or injuries;
• A new unit that will specialize in the care of cardiac, respiratory, and neurological complications;
• A new maternal newborn unit with 10 private birthing suites, two operating rooms and a 10-bassinette newborn intensive care unit to provide specialized care for newborns who are underweight, sick or need extra care;
• An outpatient unit for day procedures, allowing patients same-day discharge and recovery at home; and
• Patient rooms filled with natural light, providing privacy and space for patient’s family members.

“The new patient tower at Etobicoke General Hospital will provide patients and families with a new, state-of-the-art facility that will provide care for generations to come,” said Ford. “This project is part of our plan to invest $27 billion over the next 10 years in hospital infrastructure projects to build more capacity throughout Ontario.”
