COLUMBUS, OHIO — Today, Premier Doug Ford and Ohio Governor Mike DeWine had a successful meeting where they committed to work together to strengthen trade ties, enhance business competitiveness, and improve the lives of the people they serve.
Ontario and Ohio are taking action to make it easier for companies in their respective jurisdictions to do business. The governments have agreed to explore concrete steps to improve market access and procurement issues for both Ontario and Ohio businesses.
“Governor DeWine and I are 100% committed to joining forces to remove barriers to success for businesses,” said Premier Ford. “This commitment will help us foster more open trade and protect good-paying jobs for the millions of workers and businesses that depend on the two-way trade over our shared border every day.”
“Today was a great opportunity to talk about the needs of Ohio, the needs of Ontario and the goals we share,” said Governor DeWine. “I look forward to continuing the dialogue to drive economic growth and jobs for the people of Ohio and the people of Ontario.”
The leaders agreed to advance these critical discussions and their shared priorities at the upcoming Winter Meeting of the National Governors Association.
The leaders further agreed to support the continued safe and responsible operation of Enbridge Line 5, a major pipeline that carries petroleum from Western Canada to Ontario, Eastern Canada, Ohio and Michigan, which will help protect good-paying jobs for hardworking people. This critical piece of infrastructure supports businesses and local communities throughout the region on both sides of the border.
The leaders also had a productive discussion on how to address and mitigate blue-green algal blooms and their impact on Lake Erie. Ontario and Ohio will continue to work together to help reduce phosphorus entering Lake Erie.
