#TorontoStrong Fund surpasses $1 million mark

The #TorontoStrong Fund, established by the City of Toronto and Toronto Foundation in response to this week’s tragedy on Yonge Street, has surpassed $1 million in donations.

“The horrific events of April 23 have shown the world how Toronto responds to tragedy. We are united in grief and the desire to support those affected by Monday’s attack,” said Mayor John Tory. “Through the generosity and outpouring of support from individual donors, corporate citizens and community organizations, the City of Toronto’s partnership with the Toronto Foundation to create the #TorontoStrong Fund has now raised more than $1 million.”

The funds were raised from personal donations as well as from many generous corporate donations. To date, the following corporations have made financial donations, commitments of point-of-sale donations and employee donation matching campaigns: Bell Canada, BMO Financial Group, Canada Goose, Cara Foods, CIBC, CN Rail, Franklin Templeton, Holt Renfrew, HSBC, LCBO, Manulife, MLSE, POI Business Interiors Inc., Questrade Inc., RBC, Rio Can, Rogers, Scotiabank, Shopify, TD Bank and Tridel.

Toronto Foundation is also pleased to announce a new partnership with Canada Zakat. Canada Zakat, a project of DawaNet, has already raised close to $200,000 through its GoFundMe campaign, one of the first to launch in the aftermath of the tragedy. The organization will continue to fundraise with all donations going to the #TorontoStrong Fund. To learn more about Canada Zakat, visit https://www.facebook.com/CanadaZakat/.

Additionally, Rogers is facilitating a text-to-donate campaign through its Mobile Giving Foundation. Those interested in supporting the #TorontoStrong Fund can now donate $5, $10, $20 or $25 by texting TORONTO to 80100. After texting 80100, donors will receive a text asking them to indicate the amount they wish to donate, as well as a confirmation text.
