Brad Bradford Gets Action on Bail Compliance Units

Brad Bradford on April 19 makes Bail Compliance Units Announcement

TORONTO – In response to Brad Bradford’s less talk, more action leadership to make Toronto safe, today the provincial government acted on his call for funding to create Bail Compliance Units at the Toronto Police Service. Brad first announced this April 19.

Every single Toronto Police division needs dedicated bail compliance officers keeping tabs on repeat offenders the courts are releasing into our communities. For example, over 100 people are out on release facing firearm related charges in northern Etobicoke, but right now there is not a single officer dedicated to enforcing bail conditions at 23 Division.

In response to this great news, Brad Bradford made the following statement:

“Safety has to be our top priority, which is why I have focussed on the issue of bail compliance to start this mayoral campaign. Frontline officers have told me this is sorely needed and could not understand why the province and police leadership hadn’t acted on this for years.”

“It’s great to see Premier Ford and Solicitor General Kerzner answer my call to make our communities safe and stop the revolving door of repeat offenders. This is what a responsive government that works with others can accomplish and how I will continually get things done as Toronto’s Mayor.”

Details of Brad Bradford’s Proposed Toronto Police Service Bail Compliance Units:

  • 68 new officers, with an average of 4 per Toronto’s 17 police divisions.

  • Exclusively tasked with engaging, monitoring, deterring and enforcing compliance of the law with individuals in the community on released on bail.

  • There are currently over 1,500 individuals before the courts, accused of violent crimes released on bail with very strict conditions like curfews and house arrest.

  • The Bail Compliance Units are estimated to cost $16 million for its first year, $10 million annually and would be paid for by the Government of Ontario with their follow through on public commitments to improve safety.
