The City of Mississauga has won three financial awards from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

These awards consist of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2023-2026 Business Plan & 2023 Budget document, the Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award for the 2021 Financial Report Highlights, and the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for the 2021 Financial and Sustainability Report. The GFOA awards are given to municipalities who meet the highest government budgeting and financial reporting standards.

“Receiving these prestigious awards year-over-year is a testament to the City’s commitment to excellence in business planning and financial reporting,” said Shari Lichterman, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer. “I would like to thank Mayor and Council for their leadership and congratulate our City team on this award.”

Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

The City of Mississauga received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2023-2026 Business Plan & 2023 Budget document. This is the first award for Mississauga’s modernized budget document, which is now more focussed, shorter and easier to read. The award recognizes the City’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting while ensuring that the budget serves not only as a financial plan, but also as a policy document, an operations guide, and a communications device to its residents, businesses and stakeholders. This is the 34th consecutive year that Mississauga has received this award, the most by a Canadian municipality.

Canadian Award for Financial Reporting

The Canadian Award for Financial Reporting has been awarded to the City of Mississauga for presenting its year-end financial information in a clear, concise, innovative and informative manner through its 2021 Financial and Sustainability Report. The City began reporting on sustainability-related initiatives in 2020 and continues to apply sustainability concepts in planning, accounting and reporting activities, including in its Strategic Plan, several master plans and various initiatives. This is the 25th consecutive year that Mississauga has received this award.

Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award

The Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award for the 2021 Financial Report Highlights recognizes the City’s strong ability to produce a report that is accessible, and easy to read and understand by residents who may not have an advanced understanding of municipal finance. This is the sixth consecutive year that Mississauga has received this award.

The City’s budget and financial reporting activities shape and direct how Mississauga works. The continued recognition from GFOA reflects decades of thoughtful municipal planning, budgeting and fiscal discipline practised by Mississauga’s Council and the City’s leadership team.
