The City of Toronto has completed emergency repair work for a watermain break at King Street West and University Avenue. All roads have reopened and regular TTC service has resumed.
The watermain break was discovered on Saturday, January 21. City crews worked around the clock to repair 25 metres of a 300 mm diameter watermain and to fill a void that was created under TTC tracks due to the watermain break. Water supply was maintained to all local residences and businesses.
The collapse occurred on a watermain slated to be replaced in 2025 as part of Toronto Water’s infrastructure renewal plans. The City has a robust watermain replacement and rehabilitation program. A combination of factors are considered when prioritizing watermain replacement, including pipe age and material, break frequency, operational performance, future growth and coordination with other construction projects (i.e. roads, transit, sewer, gas, hydro, etc.) in order to minimize cost and disruption to the community.
The City works to replace aging infrastructure. Watermain breaks used to average nearly 1,700 per year. In the last few years, that number has been reduced to approximately 700 breaks annually.
All regular TTC services along King Street West and University Avenue have resumed.
