The Extreme Cold Weather Alert issued on January 17 continues today. The City of Toronto’s Warming Centres at the following locations will remain open:
• 129 Peter St.
• 5800 Yonge St.
• Exhibition Place, Better Living Centre, 195 Princes’ Blvd.
A fourth Warming Centre will be activated at Centennial Recreation Centre at 1967 Ellesmere Rd. It replaces the Warming Centre typically located at the Scarborough Civic Centre, which is currently unavailable due to construction taking place over the weekend.
Centennial Recreation Centre will open for new referrals at 7 p.m. tonight. Service providers and clients can access space by calling Central Intake at 416-338-4766. Walk-ins are also welcome.
Clients currently at the Scarborough Civic Centre Warming Centre will be offered transportation to the temporary location at Centennial Recreation Centre.
In addition to the services available at the four Warming Centres, the City’s Streets to Homes Program will continue to dispatch additional 24/7 teams to connect with people living outside and encourage them to come indoors. Throughout the winter, outreach staff hands out blankets, sleeping bags and warm winter clothing.
