Formula 1 Racing Spain, Day 2

Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen

Good morning F1 fans, welcome to day 2 of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Spain, 2022.  Today we will see practice 3, qualifying and pole positioning.   The day is split into two sessions. In practice 3 we will see different tires being tested, along with data collected on them.

Note: With a harder tire comes a slower racing pace. It also takes harder and medium tires longer to warm up.

Today’s features will be about understanding the different types of tires (compounds) used in a race.

Racing tires could easily be affected by several things. Starting with the elements of the track, wind, rain, and the heat.

Track conditions affect the overall team strategies and racing pace. Some compounds take time to warm up some wear fast on a heated track but the worse conditions are slick soft compounds on a wet and rainy track surface.  It’s like driving on pure ice.

Racing Tyres; Know the Difference

(S)  SOFT

The P Zero Red Soft tires are the mandatory Q3 compound. The drivers reaching Q3 receive one set of this compound only for their final attempt to take pole position. This will mostly be the tire of choice to reach maximum speed and all-out pace during the weekend.

There is a hook, this tyre lacks the endurance and the compound of the tyre can wear and tear easily within twenty laps or so depending on the circuit and track temperature. Keep in mind that 1 or 2 pit stops might be needed to change to another compound.

(M) MEDIUM

During most race weekends, the P Zero Yellow Medium tyres will be an option for optimal team strategies to keep up the balance in the durability and performance of the racing car.

(H) HARD

The P Zero White Hard tyres are the hardest available compounds but the most durable and the slowest on a single lap. If the team strategy is a one-lane pit stop, these tyres go for the long haul.

(I) INTERMEDIATE

The Cinturato Green Intermediate tyres are multipurpose and used on a wet or dry track. This tyre can disperse about thirty litres of water per second per tyre at 300 kph!

(W) WET

The Cinturato Blue Wet tyres can disperse up to 85 litres of rainwater per second per tyre at 300 kph, making these tyres the most effective resolution for heavy rainwater.

Qualifying: (Q1, Q2, Q3)

The second half of the day is the most thrilling in sense of pure racing speed at its best. Qualifying for pole position. Qualifying will be divided into three. Q3, Q1 top 15 of 20 racing cars with the best time advance into Q2. Followed by the top 10 out of fifteen racing cars remaining advance to Q3 where pole position will be decided by the top ten fastest racing cars. “Premium Pole could be taken on the last lap, last sec, or last corner at heightened speeds.

Practice 3

Early morning to all across Canada and F1 fans worldwide. Practice 3 is well underway. We already have a driver who is out of the session, Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) is out, due to a malfunction in his engine, mostly from overheating.

Another driver Mick Schumacher, team (Haas) back in the garage after a brake malfunction, “brake fire.”

Once again Charles LeClerc (Ferrari) finishes first, with a time of 1:19.722 on soft compound tyres, followed by Max Verstappen in second and George Russell in third,

The main event for today’s is Qualifying and pole position less than 3 hours away.
