Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) was established in 1968 originally as the Town of Mississauga’s Fire Department. With only 83 firefighters and four pumper crews, the service evolved into the City of Mississauga’s Fire Department on January 1, 1974.
Today, MFES has a staff of more than 750 working across the five divisions of MFES. They include, Fire Prevention & Risk Reduction, Operations, Training & Technology, Capital Assets and Administration.
MFES is led by Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Services, Deryn Rizzi. Chief Rizzi officially started on February 2, 2021, after serving as Fire Chief for the City of Vaughan.
Firefighters do a lot more than just fight fires.
Firefighters respond to all types of calls including: high risk, medical emergencies, vehicle collisions, confined space rescue, trench rescue, rope rescue, ice and water rescue and fires and hazardous materials. Firefighters also engage with the community and support public education, outreach and events in Mississauga.
MFES by the Numbers
- MFES has 31 front-line apparatus, which includes:
17 Pumpers, eight Aerials, six Squads and additional Hazardous Response Vehicles and various other support vehicles in its fleet. - On average, MFES responds to 30,000 calls annually.
- Mississauga has 21 fire stations across the city
In addition to fire stations, Mississauga is home to a state-of-the-art training facility – Garry W. Morden Centre, named after the City’s former Fire Chief Garry Morden. The facility is home to MFES Training and Mechanical Divisions, City of Mississauga Information Technology Training, the Toronto Scottish Army Reserve Company and the Peel Regional Police.

Mississauga’s newest fire station, Station 120, opened for operation in November 2019. It’s located at 125 Eglinton Avenue West beside Fairwinds Park.
Construction is set to begin this spring on Station 125, which will be the city’s 22nd fire station. Station 125 will be built at Tenth Line and Aquitaine Avenue and is expected to open in 2025. The construction of Station 125 is part of a City-wide plan to build six new fire stations over the next 12 years to help improve emergency response times across Mississauga.
