Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with President of Argentina Alberto Fernández

Yesterday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, on the margins of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rome, Italy.

President Fernández congratulated Prime Minister Trudeau on his re-election.

The leaders discussed key issues on the Summit agenda, including challenges facing the global economy, pandemic response and preparedness, and climate change.

The Prime Minister and the President expressed their interest in deepening their collaboration in areas such as protecting and promoting human rights and advancing gender equality, including through public policies that are inclusive, fair, and equitable for all. They agreed on the importance of inclusive and progressive approaches, including rules-based trade, as a way to help address inequalities and ensure future economic resilience.

The two leaders recognized the devastating health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world. They discussed how to work, in partnership with other international partners, to ensure a strong and inclusive economic recovery that leaves no one behind. They spoke about the need for liquidity and debt treatments to enable economic recovery and growth in Latin America.

The Prime Minister and the President acknowledged the extent to which the pandemic has deepened social, health, and economic disparities for Indigenous peoples across Latin America. They spoke about how to address these inequalities through action and investments aimed at closing gaps in housing, health, and education for Indigenous communities.

The leaders also discussed shared priorities in advance of the COP26 summit taking place in Glasgow, United Kingdom. They agreed to work together to encourage leadership and ambition on climate mitigation, adaptation, and finance.

The Prime Minister and the President reaffirmed their countries’ strong bilateral relationship, founded on more than 80 years of diplomatic, trade, and investment ties.
