Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks with Leader of the Official Opposition Erin O’Toole

Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, the Honourable Erin O’Toole, ahead of next week’s budget.

The Prime Minister provided an update on the COVID-19 situation in Canada and discussed the budget’s priorities. Mr. O’Toole presented the Prime Minister with his party’s views for the upcoming federal budget.

The Prime Minister raised the importance of having Parliament work without obstruction, and specifically urged the quick passage of legislation to implement the Fall Economic Statement 2020, which is being debated in the House of Commons today and would provide urgent support to millions of Canadians. The Prime Minister also urged Mr. O’Toole to support the passage of legislation to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, ban conversion therapy, and implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Prime Minister reiterated his unequivocal defence of women’s right to choose and raised concerns about any legislative efforts to undermine these rights.

This meeting follows the Deputy Prime Minister’s consultations with the opposition parties, as part of an ongoing engagement process.
