Second Case of Measles Reported in Toronto, Public Health Urges Vigilance

Toronto, Canada – Toronto Public Health (TPH) has issued a warning following the confirmation of the second case of measles in the city this year. The case involves an infant who recently returned from travel and is currently recovering at home.

Measles, a highly contagious disease, poses a significant risk to those who have not received adequate vaccination. Typically administered at 12 months and between four to six years of age, the measles vaccine is crucial for protection against the virus.

Individuals who may have been exposed to the measles virus are urged to take the following precautions, as advised by TPH:

1. Check Vaccination Records: It is essential for individuals to review their vaccination records to ensure they are protected against measles. While those born before 1970 are generally considered immune due to previous exposure, anyone unsure of their vaccination status is encouraged to contact their healthcare provider for guidance.

2. Monitor for Symptoms: Attendees of a magic show held at the Agincourt Public Library on March 11 between 1 and 5:30 p.m. are specifically advised to monitor themselves for symptoms until April 1. Symptoms of measles include fever, cold-like symptoms, cough, runny nose, mouth spots, sore eyes, sensitivity to light, and a red rash. Even vaccinated individuals should remain vigilant, and if symptoms arise, they should seek medical care promptly and follow precautionary measures.

All Ontarians are eligible for free measles vaccination, with school-aged children able to catch up on their routine vaccinations by booking appointments with their primary healthcare provider or attending TPH community clinics. Vaccination is also available free of charge for adults through primary care and select walk-in clinics.

For additional information and resources regarding measles prevention and management, individuals are encouraged to visit the Toronto Public Health measles webpage at www.toronto.ca/measles-fact-sheet.

As the investigation into the recent measles case continues, TPH emphasizes the importance of vaccination and prompt medical attention to prevent further spread of the disease within the community.
