Toronto school rewarded for a student-made video encouraging bystanders to possibly save a life by performing CPR

A brother and sister team of Toronto student videographers – Amanda and Joshua Feld – received a $5,000 cheque yesterday for their school as winners of a “viral video” contest called You Are the Strongest Link under the Toronto Paramedic Services’ Safe City Program. The award of $5,000, donated by sponsor Enbridge Gas, was presented at the school, Ursula Franklin Academy.

The contest, which generated a variety of creative entries, challenged students of the Toronto District School Board to create an awareness video about the importance of bystanders conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an effort to save the life of someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.

The winning video features people of various ages who could be susceptible to a sudden cardiac arrest and their survival dependent on the skills of a bystander willing and able to take appropriate action with CPR before paramedics arrive. The video can be viewed on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n6j-I_Vvl8&feature=youtu.be.

Quotes:

“With more than 2,500 people in Toronto suffering a sudden cardiac arrest every year, we know there is an opportunity for more bystanders to step in and help to save a life. Our ‘You are the Strongest Link’ program is helping build awareness of this important fact, and with more awareness more lives can be saved in our city.”
– Jon Lane, Commander, Toronto Paramedic Services Safe City Program

“We are thrilled that Josh and Amanda won this contest and were recognized for their hard work. Part of our mission at Ursula Franklin, in this case with the leadership from our Head of Healthy Living, Heather Strupat, is to encourage our student body to reach out and help their community, and this is a fantastic example of doing just that.”
– Georgia Gallagher, Principal of Ursula Franklin Academy

“Administering early CPR increases the chance of saving a life by 75 per cent. We’re proud to help encourage students to inspire others through the ‘You Are the Strongest Link’ awareness contest. Enbridge Gas makes a daily commitment to safety and is pleased to support Toronto Paramedic Services contest. Congratulations to Ursula Franklin Academy and their students for creating such a powerful safety message.”
