In a colorful and bustling classroom at David Bouchard Public School, Grade 4 student Gabby’s curiosity sparked an unexpected journey into the world of sewing. Approaching one of the Sewing Studio facilitators with a simple question – “Can I make a fanny pack?” – Gabby’s inquiry not only led to a potential new project but also underscored the transformative impact of the Sewing Studio program on young minds.

Jonathan Goorbarry, fondly known as Jay, responded to Gabby’s query with openness and flexibility, expressing a willingness to assist if materials allowed. This small interaction epitomized the ethos of the Sewing Studio, where every child’s curiosity and creativity are nurtured.

Led by dedicated facilitators like Matthew Boateng, a former Toronto Argonauts defensive back, the Sewing Studio extends beyond teaching stitches and seams. Boateng emphasized that sewing serves as a vehicle for breaking down stereotypes and building positive connections. He recounted a heartwarming encounter at Canada’s Wonderland, where former students proudly showcased their sewing creations, a testament to the lasting impact of the program.

The Sewing Studio boasts an eclectic mix of mentors, including former professional athletes, challenging stereotypes and serving as role models for the students. Keegan, a Grade 8 student at David Bouchard PS, seized the opportunity to hone his sewing skills while crafting a fanny pack. Reflecting on his experience, Keegan shared how he learned new techniques like the backstitch and gained confidence in using a sewing machine.

At the heart of the Sewing Studio’s mission is Denise Wild’s vision of an inclusive and empowering environment where children develop confidence, a growth mindset, and tangible sewing skills. Each student embarks on a journey of creativity, guided by stereotype-busting mentors who inspire and motivate.

The Sewing Studio program transcends the confines of the classroom, instilling in students the belief that their background or appearance is not a barrier to success. Through hands-on learning and personalized projects, children at David Bouchard PS are discovering their potential and breaking down barriers, one stitch at a time.

As Gabby and her classmates continue their sewing adventures, they embody the spirit of empowerment and resilience fostered by the Sewing Studio. Their colorful creations serve as a testament to the transformative power of creativity and community, leaving an indelible mark on their school and beyond.
